Mardy Fish (USA unseeded) is through to the quarter-finals of the AEGON
Championships after he beat Andy Murray in a match that resumed on
Friday at The Queen's Club after poor light stopped play.
Fish eventually triumphed 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(2) after the match was
resumed with the score balanced at 3-3 in the third set on Centre Court.
When the match began again on Friday both players dominated on their
serve, in fact it took until the 16th point of the day before a point
went against the server.
Both players dropped only one point on serve as the match moved into
a tie-break to decide the winner. Ironically then the first four points
of the tie-break all went against the server as both players improved
their returns.
However from 2-2 in the tie-break Fish took control as Murray
faltered. Some excellent serve and volley play from the American and
some forced errors from Murray meant that the momentum went with Fish
and he won the next four points to lead 6-2 in the breaker.
On his first match point he came to the net again to pressurise the
British No. 1 and when an attempted backhand pass went long Fish had
triumphed. He will now play Michael Llodra following the Nadal vs Lopez
match on Centre Court.
Speaking afterwards Murray commented on the resumption of the match
on Friday: "It was a bit of a shoot-out really. On grass the momentum
swings very quickly, I played two or three bad points and I'd lost the
match".
"I haven't been playing my best lately but come Wimbledon I'll be
playing better". Murray will now consider playing some exhibition
matches before Wimbledon begins a week on Monday.
